Why I Joined The Dad Network…

Why I Joined The Dad Network… So let me set the scene…A man goes into a garden center and becomes aware that his 2 year old son needs his nappy changed. Upon finding the loos he finds that the only baby changing facility was in the female loos! Luckily there is a member of staff stacking shelves; ‘Is there any where I can change my sons nappy’ The man asks. ‘Yes over there’ replies the member of staff (Gesturing towards the female loos) ‘That’s the female’s though’ ‘Oh Yer…!’ This was a reality for me. I resolved by suggesting a female member of staff check that the loo was clear and wait outside. Without any female members of staff on  they asked a member of the restaurant team to help.

Dads For Change…

I took to Facebook for a moan, as is the modern world! A friend of mine told me that a man was on Good Morning Britain (Al Ferguson) discussing ‘Dads for change’ an initiative  from ‘The Dad Network’ The website http://www.thedadnetwork.co.uk/dad-friendly-facilities/ allows you to name and shame those places that seem to be ignorant that a lot of babies and children have fathers who want to be an active parent! It also allows you to praise places too where baby changing facilities are Dad friendly.

The Dad Network…

So after I finished populating the website I explored the rest of ‘The Dad Network’ I found the page https://www.facebook.com/Thedadnetwork/?fref=ts and private group for dads https://www.facebook.com/groups/TheDadNetwork/ Here I found a support network of of over 4,600 dads! All the questions I had as a father for the last 2 years were being answered by Dads who had experienced the same problems! I wanted to be an active part of the community so started discussions with Al Ferguson (Creator of The Dad Network) about becoming a blog contributor. This was completely out of my comfort zone but I have always been one for a challenge. My first blog as written whilst my wife was in labor! http://www.thedadnetwork.co.uk/how-to-bring-on-labour/ eventually this led me to creating www.fatherleemoments.com

Not knowing many fathers in my town I posted ‘Are there any dads in the Basingstoke area that fancy meeting up’ This was when Al Ferguson messaged me suggesting I join onto  The Dad Network Local….

The Dad Network Local…

The Dad Network Local North Hampshire was set up by myself and Al, joining 9 others across the UK to create opportunities for dads within North Hampshire to meet up regularly and share experiences. https://www.facebook.com/groups/TheDadNetworkNorthHampshire/?ref=group_browse_new

I sent out a press release in an attempt to bring in more members. Before I knew it I had local papers calling me about the group and the struggles of being ‘a modern Dad’ http://www.basingstokeobserver.co.uk/dad-martin-pleads-for-parental-equality  I was also thrown out of my comfort zone when asked to do an interview with Ann Diamond on BBC Radio Berkshire! (One of the scariest and funest experiences of my life!)

There are many strands to The Dad Network but I feel myself growing with confidence each day knowing I have the support of over 4,600 like minded dads! Also writing this blog and contributing blogs to The Dad Network is something I never dreamed of doing, apparently all I need was a little encouragement so thank you to Al and all The Dad Network. Please join the above links, even if you feel like you don’t need the support you never know when you will all opportunities they provide.

Next Step…

I have just seen that Al Ferguson is looking for Vloggers (Video Bloggers for non techies!) Not sure if I am ready for this yet….
